In decaying societies, politics become theater. The elite, who have hollowed out the democratic system to serve the corporate state, rule through image and presentation. They express indignation at AIG bonuses and empathy with a working class they have spent the last few decades disenfranchising, and make promises to desperate families that they know will never be fulfilled. Once the spotlights go on they read their lines with appropriate emotion. Once the lights go off, they make sure Goldman Sachs and a host of other large corporations have the hundreds of billions of dollars in losses they incurred playing casino capitalism repaid with taxpayer money.

We live in an age of moral nihilism. We have trashed our universities, turning them into vocational factories that produce corporate drones and chase after defense-related grants and funding. The humanities, the discipline that forces us to stand back and ask the broad moral questions of meaning and purpose, that challenges the validity of structures, that trains us to be self-reflective and critical of all cultural assumptions, have withered. Our press, which should promote such intellectual and moral questioning, confuses bread and circus with news and refuses to give a voice to critics who challenge not this bonus payment or that bailout but the pernicious superstructure of the corporate state itself. We kneel before a cult of the self, elaborately constructed by the architects of our consumer society, which dismisses compassion, sacrifice for the less fortunate, and honesty. The methods used to attain what we want, we are told by reality television programs, business schools and self-help gurus, are irrelevant. Success, always defined in terms of money and power, is its own justification. The capacity for manipulation is what is most highly prized. And our moral collapse is as terrifying, and as dangerous, as our economic collapse.

Needless to say we are all delegates and 3 of us (my husband and I included) have been put on the ballot to run for district delegates (4/16). From there we can go to state and run for state delegates (5/03) and from there national..

Everyone always says don't judge a book by its cover, but it is impossible not to. After finishing Panzner's truly disturbing vision of the future, the cover of Peter Schiff's Crash Proof looks positively glib. It shows a little pink piggy bank safely sheltered from stormy skies by its own personal (pigsonal?) umbrella. How cute. And then there is the clich'd subtitle: "How to profit from the coming economic collapse." Oh, brother. Honestly, I didn't have high hopes, and as a result I was quite pleasantly surprised. Perhaps this will be the key to surviving the upcoming hard times: Low expectations.

Schiff pulls no punches in unmasking the rosy statistics that the government and its corporate media accomplices foist upon an unsuspecting and gullible public. The US economy is a paper tiger, and Schiff wastes no time getting straight to work with the shredder. "America.com" as he calls us, referencing the hundreds of dot.com companies that burned brilliantly until they burned out completely for lack of substance, has some mistaken ideas about the true nature of wealth and how it is created. Real wealth, Schiff reminds us, comes the old fashioned way - from saving, investment and production. In its salad days, America became a global manufacturing giant through hard work, and by investing the nation's abundant savings back into production. The salad days are gone, as America has gone from a nation of savers, investors and producers to a nation of borrowers, gamblers and consumers.

Here is How We Can Start Talking About Race

Two interesting things happened on Wednesday that are related one another even though it might not seem like it at first blush. The NY Post ran a cartoon of two cops shooting a monkey which a lot of people considered racist. And the new Attorney General, Eric Holder, said that we were a "nation of cowards" because we were scared to talk about race.

Here is how the two things relate to one another. One of the reasons that the country is afraid to talk openly about race is because people are afraid that they are going to be called racists or charged with insensitivity for what they say (or in this case draw). We have to start giving these people a pass even if we suspect that they did not have the best of intentions.

Why? Because if we yell racism every time there is a question about race then people will clam up. Does that mean that nothing should be considered racist anymore or that we shouldn't challenge people on what they have said or done? No, of course not. But it does mean that we should change the way we talk about these issues.

Instead of calling Sean Delonas, the cartoonist at the NY Post, a racist, we should ask him if he understands why his drawing might come across as offensive to some. Not to prove our point, but to start an actual dialogue. Ask him, "Can you not see that given the historical taunts against African-Americans that some may interpret your cartoon as directed at the president? It says in your cartoon that the monkey wrote the stimulus package, whether you intended it or not, can you not see how people might interpret that as a reference to Barack Obama?"

Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL) filed a comprehensive anti-gun wish-list bill in the 111th Congress on its first day in session. No sooner were the new members of Congress sworn in than Mr. Rush, a former Black Panther leader, file his bill which he calls the "Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009". The bill has no cosponsors and was automatically referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

If passed, this bill would require that anyone wishing to purchase, own, or possess a "qualifying firearm" - that's any handgun, and any long gun capable of accepting a detachable magazine - would have to be licensed by the state or the federal government in a licensing program managed by the Attorney General. To get a license you would have to prove you're you, provide a passport-style photo, a thumbprint, and take a written exam which includes questions about firearms safety, safe storage, the risks of firearms ownership, and anything else the Attorney General deems appropriate. All transfers would be required to go through a licensed dealer with the exception of occasional gifts or bequests between parents, children (18 or over), and grandparents, or loans of not more than 30 days between "persons who are personally known to one another." (It actually says that. I'm not making this up.) And all transfers would have to be recorded in a "Transfer Record" established and maintained by the Attorney General.
The bill also makes it a crime for a dealer to have shoddy records or fail to appropriately cooperate with any inspectors. It makes failure to report the loss or theft of a firearm within 72 hours a felony punishable by up to 2 years in prison. Failure to keep a firearm locked up in such a way as to keep it inaccessible to anyone under 18 becomes a federal felony too.

Police Informant's Death Brings New Law, Lawsuit

The murder of a 23-year-old Florida woman in a botched drug buy-bust operation this May could lead to changes in how confidential informants are recruited and used by the state's law enforcement.

An official investigation found the Tallahassee Police Department had violated its own rules by recruiting Rachel Hoffman, a Florida State University graduate who was facing a drug charge and likely jail time after arrests for marijuana possession, and sending her alone into a dangerous undercover sting without training.

Florida state legislators are putting the finishing touches on a bill they are calling "Rachel's Law," which would tighten up rules on how the state's police recruit and use confidential informants. The law, which was first proposed by Rachel's father, Irv Hoffman, would require police in Florida to be more judicious in their selection of confidential informants and ensure the potential recruit has access to a lawyer.

Its likely sponsors, State Sen. Mike Fasano and State Rep. Peter Nehr, expect the bill to be considered when the legislature begins its regular session next spring. Both are Republican.

Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones has signed on as a supporter of the effort. "We need to do a better job with this," Jones said in September.

Jones' support was perhaps surprising. In the days after Hoffman's murder, Jones made public statements that Hoffman was a criminal who bore a large part of the blame for the botched sting and, by extension, her own death.

"I'm calling her a criminal," Jones told ABC News' Brian Ross in July. Jones said then that he did not accept that his department was in any way responsible for Hoffman's death. "Do we feel responsible? We're responsible for the safety of this community," he said.

Jones, who was reprimanded as a result of the investigation into Hoffman's murder, later apologized for those comments. "We were placing most of the blame on Rachel Hoffman. I regret that now," Jones said. "It made us look like we weren't taking responsibility for what happened."

Hoffman Parents Poised to Sue Tallahasssee

The two men Hoffman met as part of the May sting are in jail awaiting trial for her murder. One defendant, Andrea Green, has pled not guilty. The other, Deneilo Bradshaw, has not yet entered a plea, according to the court cleark's office.

Cheney 'Signed Off' on Waterboarding at Gitmo

Author's note: The statements Cheney made this week during an interview with the Washington Times about his role in approving the waterboarding of three Guantanamo detainees and the so-called "enhanced interrogation" of 33 prisoners was, disturbingly, not covered at all by the mainstream media.

Vice President Dick Cheney, in another stunning admission during his campaign to burnish the Bush administration’s legacy, said he personally authorized the “enhanced interrogations” of 33 suspected terrorist detainees and approved the waterboarding of three so-called “high-value” prisoners.

“I signed off on it; others did, as well, too,” Cheney said about the waterboarding, a practice of simulated drowning done by strapping a person to a board, covering the face with a cloth and then pouring water over it, a torture technique dating back at least to the Spanish Inquisition. The victim feels as if he is drowning.

Cheney identified the three waterboarded detainees as al-Qaeda figures Abu Zubaydah, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and al Nashiri. “That's it, those three guys,” Cheney said in an interview with the right-wing Washington Times.

Other detainees at secret CIA prisons and at Guantanamo Bay were subjected to harsh treatment, including being stripped naked, forced into painful stress positions, placed in extremes of heat or cold and prevented from sleeping – actions that international human rights organizations, and previously the U.S. government, have denounced as torture and illegal abuse.

“I thought that it was absolutely the right thing to do,” Cheney said of what he called the “enhanced interrogation” of the detainees. “I thought the [administration’s] legal opinions that were rendered [endorsing the harsh treatment] were sound. I think the techniques were reasonable in terms of what they [the CIA interrogators] were asking to be able to do. And I think it produced the desired result.”

Cheney also took issue with the notion that waterboarding was torture.

“Was it torture? I don't believe it was torture,” Cheney said. “The CIA handled itself, I think, very appropriately. They came to us in the administration, talked to me, talked to others in the administration, about what they felt they needed to do in order to obtain the intelligence that we believe these people were in possession of.”

Other experts, including some military and intelligence interrogators, have disputed Cheney’s claims of success in extracting reliable information through waterboarding and other harsh techniques. Much of the confessed information turned out to be dubious or incorrect.

The First Case

Zubaydah was the first “war on terror” detainee to be subjected to the Bush administration’s waterboarding, according to Pentagon and Justice Department documents, news reports and several books written about the Bush administration’s interrogation methods.

However, according to author Ron Suskind who interviewed CIA and other insiders, Abu Zubaydah was not the "high-value detainee" that the Bush administration had claimed. Rather, Zubaydah was a minor player in the al-Qaeda organization, handling travel for associates and their families, Suskind wrote in his book The One Percent Doctrine.

Nevertheless, Suskind said President George W. Bush became obsessed with Zubaydah and the information he might have about pending terrorist plots against the United States.

"Bush was fixated on how to get Zubaydah to tell us the truth," Suskind wrote. Bush questioned one CIA briefer, "Do some of these harsh methods really work?"

Abu Zubaydah's captors soon discovered that their prisoner was mentally ill and knew nothing about terrorist operations or impending plots. That realization was "echoed at the top of CIA and was, of course, briefed to the President and Vice President," Suskind wrote.

But Bush did not want to "lose face" because he had stated Zubaydah’s importance publicly, according to Suskind.

The Destructive World of "Troubled Assets": Paulson shoots another arrow into the heart of the Economy

The announcement in the last few days of a deal reached between the U.S. Treasury and the moribund insurance giant, A.I.G. provides a very lucid insight in to the nefarious and destructive world of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, otherwise known as T.A.R.P..Not only have A.I.G. received $152 billion to date and subsequently reported a third quarter loss of $25 billion, now they are to be cleared of their obligation on $53 billion worth of toxic credit default swaps. U.S. taxpayers are now on the hook for $205 billion courtesy of an institution which played in the Wall St. casino that passes for a "Financial Sector" and lost. Under the "Free market" system, so expounded upon by Government and Wall St. alike, A.I.G should be in chapter 11. Bailing out A.I.G and other failing institutions does absolutely nothing to address the fundamental issues at hand.

The economy is in crisis because unemployment and overarching debt levels pushed thousands of families in to the untenable situation where they did not earn enough to cover their debts. This burst the real estate bubble inflated by Alan Greenspan, crashed real estate prices, consumer spending and manufacturing. What we are seeing now is the inevitable result of lack of Financial regulation, lax monetary policy and a symbiosis between Government and the Financial industry. The mortgages taken out by buyers had been bundled into complex financial instruments; Mortgage backed securities. The latter along with Credit default swaps and derivatives set the stage for a global financial meltdown. The Glass-Steagal act of 1933 had been conceived to prevent the Banking sector from indulging in high risk investments to protect the depositors of these institutions. This was repealed at the end of the Clinton Administration through the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 which opened the gates to financial destruction. With the stroke of a pen, the financial services sector was given the power to literally bring down an economy

The most urgent matter for Treasury to address is the toxic derivatives market. The notional amount of outstanding derivatives, as noted by the Bank of International settlements, comes close to $512 trillion. This represents a figure that is impossible to settle and is the real Armageddon which Banks are preparing for by hoarding the cash that they have received through the T.A.R.P..Unless this time bomb is defused by bringing the undeclared positions on the table, the duration and gravity of this crisis can only increase. As the underlying assets of these instruments crumble the Banks' exposure to counterparty risk increases and will lead to the inevitable collapse of even more banks and reduce the availability of investment credit even more. The underlying assets include interest rates, mortgages, foreign exchange rates, credit ratings on companies and even creditworthiness of entire countries. This is the level of insanity that has passed for "Leveraged Investment"

With over $3 trillion of taxpayer money injected in to Banks, insurance companies, commercial paper, Fannie and Freddie what has come back to benefit the dying economy ? A reduction in lending, increased interest rates on credit card payments and further losses for these same institutions. No big surprise as the real economy has never stopped it's nosedive. Does the Treasury really not realise that there is no point in investing in companies that have no chance of redemption ? By handing over Americans' hard earned tax dollars and indebting future generations, the Treasury has been engaging in the biggest transfer of wealth in Human history. The U.S. is now the biggest debtor on the planet and the rest of the world has noticed. China, Japan and the Oil kingdoms that buy U.S. debt are losing faith and it's only a matter of time until they turn off the tap.

Maybe Ralph Nader was right in predicting that the same Wall Street hustlers would have a lock on our government no matter which major party won the election. I hate to admit it, since it wasn't that long ago that I heatedly challenged Nader in a debate on this very point.

But how else is one to respond to Barack Obama's picking the very folks who helped get us into this financial mess to now lead us out of it? Watching the president-elect's Monday introduction of his economic team, my brother-in-law Pete said, "You can see the feathers coming out of their mouths" as the foxes were once again put in charge of the henhouse. He didn't have time to expound on his point, having to get ready to go sort mail in his job at the post office, but he showed me a statement from Citigroup showing that the interest rate on Pete the Postal Worker's credit card was 28.9 percent, an amount that all major religions would justly condemn as usurious.

Moments earlier, Obama had put his seal of approval on the Citigroup bailout, which his new economic team, led by proteges of Citigroup Executive Committee Chairman Robert Rubin, enthusiastically endorsed. A bailout that brings to $45 billion the taxpayer money thrown at Citigroup and the guarantee of $306 billion for the bank's "toxic securities" that would have been illegal if not for changes in the law that Citigroup secured with the decisive help of Rubin and Lawrence Summers, the man who replaced him as Treasury secretary in the Clinton administration.

Things like Dr. Paul just sort of blind-side you. I've had my beliefs all my life but no one (in politics) has ever spoken to them with any conviction or understanding until I heard Dr. Paul describe himself as "the champion of the Constitution".

I remember asking my brother, who makes me look mainstream, if this guys was the 'real deal'. He assured me he was.

A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. The Chairman and Executive Officer of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler traveled to Washington in style to beg for government handouts they claim essential to avoid going out of business. Each made the costly trip in a multi million-dollar corporate jet, according to a major network news outlet that offered the outrageous details.

According to the report, General Motors spent around $20,000 so that CEO Rick Wagoner could take a $36 million luxury aircraft to ask Congress for a $12 billion bailout. He could have flown first class from Detroit for less than $1,000 roundtrip and less than $300 roundtrip in coach.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally gets his corporate jet as part of his lucrative contract, which paid him nearly $30 million last year even though the auto giant is on the verge of bankruptcy. He doesn"t even live in Detroit, but rather Seattle, and uses the plane to fly home on weekends. Mulally assured the Senate Banking Committee this week that he has cut expenses by closing more than a dozen plants and eliminating thousands of workers.

He conveniently omitted that his company still operates a fleet of eight private jets for top executives. Regardless, the soon-to-bee president is pushing hard for a taxpayer bailout of the nation"s auto giants, saying that allowing the industry to completely collapse would be a disaster.

WILLACY COUNTY - A Willacy County grand jury has indicted a number of political figures, including Vice President Dick Cheney.

Indictments have not yet been made public and we're told a district judge still has to sign the indictments. Two state district judges are also indicted along with Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 is digging to find out more. Senator Lucio has already issued a statement in response to the indictment. It says a motion will be filed to quash Senator Lucio's indictment this week.

Obama transition points to more war and repression

President-elect Barack Obama owes his victory, both in the Democratic primaries and the general election, in large part to the overwhelming hostility of the American people to the years of military aggression, torture, extraordinary rendition, domestic spying and all of the other crimes that will constitute the indelible legacy of the Bush administration.

Thanks to his carefully calibrated criticisms of these policies, as well as his indictment of his principal Democratic opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton, for her October 2002 vote authorizing the US invasion of Iraq, Obama’s “change you can believe in” was perceived by many, both in the US and abroad, as a promise that his election would signal an end to militarism and attacks on democratic rights.

As the transition to the new administration unfolds, however, belief in Obama’s promise of change can be sustained only to the extent that one fails to examine the political record of those who are involved in this process.

For the most part, the Obama-Biden transition team is staffed by veterans of the Clinton administration, associated with the US wars in the Balkans and the policy of regime change in Iraq that set the stage for the war that followed under the Bush presidency.

Symbolic of this relationship is Obama’s decision to send Clinton’s former secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, to this weekend’s Group of 20 meeting in Washington as his personal emissary. Confronted in a 1996 interview on the CBS News program “60 Minutes” with the fact that US sanctions against Iraq had led to the deaths of half a million Iraqi children, Albright replied, “It’s a hard choice, but the price, we, think, is worth it.” She subsequently became a key architect of the US-backed dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the subsequent war against Serbia, which was marked by the widespread bombing of civilian targets. Such is Obama’s face to the world.

Christian Persecutors Host U.N. Religious Summit

A Muslim nation that persecutes Christians and has a special police force to ensure that only a narrow Islamic sect predominates in its kingdom is sponsoring a United Nations summit on religious tolerance this week.

Further diminishing the credibility of the notoriously corrupt world body, Saudi Arabia is hosting the U.N. summit (SCulture of Peace) in New York this week. The conference was the brilliant idea of Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, a renowned violator of religious and human rights.

Dozens of world leaders, including President George W. Bush, will attend the event even though the State Department agency that combats religious persecution abroad (U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom) considers religious freedom to be non existent in the Arab kingdom. The practice of religions other than Islam is strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia and religious leaders of other faiths are not permitted in the country.

Regardless of these well-documented facts, the U.N. is touting King Abdullah as the organizer of the summit which is supposed to deepen understanding and appreciation of religions, faiths and cultures. In fact, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-noon praised the oppressive Saudi ruler"s initiative to promote dialogue between the followers of different religious faiths and cultures even though the king personally forbids it in his own country.

This marks the latest of numerous examples indicating that the United Nations has become quite a joke over the years. Besides rampant fraud within in its massive procurement division and famously corrupt (several convicted in U.S. courts) high-ranking officials, the world body has done absurd things like name renowned human rights violators (Cuba, North Korea and Iran to name a few) to its coveted human rights commission.

None of this has stopped the United States from annually giving the U.N. hundreds of millions of dollars with virtually no oversight to assure that the American tax money is appropriately spent.

China's Stimulus Spells Trouble for U.S.

This week, Asian markets were initially energized by China's announcement of a near $600 billion economic stimulus package for its own economy. Although I have never been a fan of government-fueled stimuli, the relative wisdom of the plan hinges on the source of funds the Chinese government decides to utilize. Their best choice would be the country's nearly $2 trillion in foreign reserves, the largest portion of which is held in U.S. Treasury and agency debt. This pile of dollars, which really amounts to no more than a subsidy for U.S. consumers, does nothing to benefit Chinese citizens.

If it does decide to employ this ocean of cash, China will become a net seller of U.S Treasuries just as the U.S. Government itself will be pushing up its issuance of new Treasury bonds into record territory. With two huge sellers and few major buyers (just about every major creditor nation having problems of their own), the Federal Reserve will become the only reliable customer. As a result, not only will the Fed monetize our own economic stimulus packages, but will be forced to provide the same service to the Chinese.

On March 8, 2003, President Bush said in a national radio address: "We are doing everything we can to avoid war in Iraq."

Residents of Chicago's 5th Congressional District were told otherwise on the very same day by none other than their Congressman, Democrat Rahm Emanuel. "On one thing George Bush and Saddam Hussein agree," Emanuel said. "Neither of them want the [U.N.] inspections to work."

Those words were spoken during a meeting with several anti-war activists living in Emanuel's district, including members of Lincoln Park Neighbors United for Peace, Ravenswood Neighbors for Peace, and an interfaith clergy group. The activists took turns holding peace signs in front of Emanuel's office and sitting down with the Congressman in a last-ditch effort to prompt him to take a stand against the build-up to military action against Iraq.

The demonstration outside Emanuel's office was a success. "The steady stream of cars, trucks and buses kept up a din of honking," according to LPNUFP President Ted Pearson. Inside the office, however, it was a different story. Despite expressing a belief that the Bush administration was subverting the U.N. inspection process, Emanuel wouldn't commit to any action to prevent war.

Emanuel claimed to be unaware of two resolutions that would have repealed authorization for use of military force against Iraq. Undeterred, activists faxed him copies of the resolutions; he promised to consider them but never signed on as a cosponsor, and of course both measures failed.

This wasn't the first time activists met with Emanuel to press their case for peace; less than two weeks earlier, 12 or so LPNUFP members stopped by a Jewel store where he was holding a meet-and-greet event dubbed "Congress On Your Corner." According to Pearson, Emanuel's response was that "President Bush has made up his mind, and there's nothing we can do about it."

Despite these initial rebuffs, peace groups in the 5th CD remained in constant contact with Emanuel's office, by phone, e-mail, and in person whenever possible, mounting a lobbying effort that has no parallel in the local movement against the Iraq war. But more than five years and two congressional elections later, they have precious little to show for it; unlike other Chicago-area Congresspeople, Emanuel has been an immovable wall.

IVAW Protest Update:Nick Morgan Undergoes Surgery and First Court Date Set

Recently released photographs and video from the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) protest outside the final presidential debate in Hempstead, NY on Oct. 15 clearly shows IVAW member Nick Morgan getting trampled on by Nassau County police on horseback, according to Emily Forman of I-Witness Video.

The images have emerged less than two weeks before the “Hempstead 15″ — the group of 10 Iraq War veterans and 5 civilians who were arrested at the debate– are due to show up for their first court date in Nassau County on Nov. 10.

Members of the “Hempstead 15″ are calling for supporters to show their support by packing the courthouse at 8 AM, located at 99 Main St. in Hempstead. They are facing charges of “disorderly conduct” and “failure to obey a lawful order.”

I-Witness Video is a group dedicated to using video to protect protestors’ civil liberties. In an email message to the Indypendent, Forman writes, “The video is extremely disturbing and clearly shows Iraq War Veteran Nick Morgan at the moment when his head was crushed to the sidewalk under a police horse. This story has been completely ignored in the media. He was legally, peacefully … standing on the sidewalk when the event occurred.”

'Tough' Economic Times, Ya' Think..

The White House says the U.S. economy is struggling to grow and generate jobs, despite aggressive steps taken by the federal government to prop up financial institutions and unfreeze tight credit. VOA's Michael Bowman reports from Washington, the Bush administration's comments come amid further signs that the number of Americans looking for work is growing.

As a rule, White House spokespeople strenuously avoid economic predictions, particularly when the nation's financial outlook is dim.

So it was all the more remarkable that President Bush's press secretary, Dana Perino, all but stated that the United States could be in a recession.

"We are in for a rocky road on the employment front, and expect our GDP [gross domestic product] number next week not to be a good one," she said. "And the next quarter could probably be tough, as well."

Two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth meet the technical definition of a recession.

Earlier in the day, the Labor Department reported another jump in the number of people filing for government unemployment benefits. The news came as a wide variety of U.S. companies - from Internet firms to investment houses to auto manufacturers - announced cuts in their workforces. Many of America's best-known corporations have recently announced disappointing earnings that point to a broad economic slowdown.

On Capitol Hill, former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said the United States is facing a "once-in-a-century tsunami" of tight credit and housing woes. He predicted the economy will get worse before it gets better.

Perino did not challenge Greenspan's assessment, saying current economic conditions make it all the more important that the financial rescue package President Bush signed into law earlier this month be implemented as quickly as possible.

"I do not forecast from here [the podium], but looking at reality and how long it is going to take for people to return this country to job growth, it could be a while," she said. "The president knows that we are in for a rough ride, which is why he has asked us to work everyday to try to make sure that we are doing everything we can to pull us out of this slowdown."

In February, when the first signs of economic weakness were emerging, Congress passed an economic stimulus plan consisting mainly of rebate checks to American taxpayers. Asked about the prospects of rapidly enacting a second stimulus package, Perino noted that Congress will not be in full session until after the November elections.

Illegal Alien Kills Cop In (Former) Sanctuary City

A drunken illegal immigrant with an extensive criminal history and four arrest warrants killed a young police officer in a major U.S. city that for years offered illegal aliens official sanctuary.

The 25-year-old Phoenix Police officer was responding to a call when the intoxicated illegal immigrant (Salvador Vivas-Diaz) slammed his vehicle into the cop"s patrol car. Vivas-Diaz had four outstanding counts of driving under the influence, a suspended driver"s license, charges of forgery for providing false documents and failure to appear in court.

Some reports indicate that Vivas-Diaz had voluntarily returned to his native Mexico up to three times but no one seems to know for certain. Authorities did confirm that the multiple offender was carrying two fake Mexican identification cards after murdering the officer over the weekend. He is being held without bail and has been charged with manslaughter, assault and obstructing a crime investigation.

This cop killer is undoubtedly a consequence of the sanctuary long offered to illegal immigrants in Phoenix, America"s fifth-largest city. Up until a few months ago the city"s police department prohibited officers (Operations Order 1.4.3) from inquiring about suspects" immigration status and from cooperating with federal immigration officials.

The Phoenix Police Department reluctantly reversed the measure after Judicial Watch launched an investigation last year and threatened to legally challenge it. For nearly a year Judicial Watch collaborated with local businesses, community and law enforcement leaders to reverse Phoenix"s sanctuary city status.

The city"s mayor (Phil Gordon) is still a renowned illegal immigrant advocate, however. A few months ago he even ordered the FBI to investigate the local sheriff (Maricopa County"s Joe Arpaio) for supposedly violating the civil rights of illegal aliens during arrests.

The Maricopa Sheriff"s Department started cracking down on illegal immigration to restore much-needed law and order in a Phoenix business district (36th & Thomas) rife with solicitation, trespassing, loitering and public health ordinance violations long ignored by Phoenix Police because the perpetrators were illegal immigrants.
